Abraham Lincoln remains Americaâs best president, if the opinion of presidential historians is anything to go by. In C-SPANâs latest survey of presidential leadership (pdf), which polled 91 presidential historians, Lincoln retained âtop billingâ as the countryâs most esteemed leader. James Buchanan came in last place, beating out William Henry Harrison, who only served for 31 days.
In his first appearance in the survey, last conducted in 2009, Barack Obama was ranked 12th, sandwiched between Woodrow Wilson and James Monroe. George W. Bush âbenefited somewhat from the passing of the years,â moving  2009.
The survey ranked the former leaders on 10 âattributes of leadership.â These ranged from the moral categories of âcrisis leadership,â âmoral authority,â âpursued equal justice for all,â to the more technical ones of âeconomic management,â âadministrative skills,â âperformance within context of times,â and âsetting an agenda,â and included relations with the public, Congress, and other governments.
Abraham Lincoln, led the United States to ultimately defeat
the Confederacy, and following his famous Emancipation Proclamation, he
enacted measures to abolish slavery. Lincoln was correct in
supporting the Union, which opposed slavery. He did not defend the
Confederacy and the people supporting slavery.
