There is sometimes controversy over who owns the copyright to popular memes as they are usually meant to be shared free but:

β’ The people sharing the meme do not like it being shared by others
β’ they are made with art that is stolen from copy righted work
β’ there are no legal rules to stop anyone from claiming ownership
